The inquiry identifies the key factors that enable Islamophobia in Scotland. One set focuses on politics, whereby Islamophobia is reinforced by Scottish politics, politicians and elections, by far-right politicians and as a result of Brexit. Another set relates to military intervention abroad and problematic counterterrorism policies, alongside terrorist incidents, in allowing it to thrive. A third set argues that both poverty and austerity contribute. We predict that one of the main problems being created is an increase in hate crime due to current affairs profiling an uprising of right-wing politics at national and global level. This is leading to an intolerance of Islam as a religion in many cities and countries in the world. Any media and journalistic reporting of Islam/ Muslims both verbal or written is often subjective and/or part of propaganda against Islam.
Since Brexit and the ascension of individuals such as Donald Trump and Boris Johnson into positions of power, Islamophobia has been given a platform and those guilty feel emboldened and confident in their convictions whereas before such racism existed but was a taboo in society and mainstream situations.
Islamophobia permeates all domains of Scottish society; it is not only restricted to one context. It threatens education, limits employment prospects, and impacts everyday issues including health, wellbeing and housing.
