Black women have played a central role in British history for centuries. Yet still, our stories are frequently left untold. Lost in the loopholes of time or overshadowed by those of our white counterparts, our achievements have gone unrecognised and continue to be neglected in academic teachings, despite having shaped our present society in myriad ways.
The recent rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK has brought an overdue thirst for black history, with many campaigning for the national curriculum to be reformed to include Britain’s colonial and imperialist past as well as a change in narrative more widely. Both are pivotal in dismantling systemic racism – as is celebrating our unsung black heroes.
